Anderson’s Roast Beef and Custard is a Buffalo fast-food icon. Kind of like Anchor Bar wings, Loganberry, and the kimmelweck roll (which Anderson’s has plenty of).
I think I may have eaten at an Anderson’s once when I was nine—far too young to remember much about the experience. Considering there’s an Anderson’s next door to Kohl’s where I work, I figured it was time to give them a try.
Being a warm, muggy day Thursday, I decided to enjoy the nice weather and eat on Anderson’s outdoor covered porch. Beats sitting in the break room at Kohl’s. I ordered the classic roast beef, followed up by a small custard cone for dessert.
Anderson’s gives a choice of rolls including kimmelweck, kaiser (basically plain, white bread), sesame, or multigrain. I opted for the kaiser, which was what you’d expect—a boring, white bun. I should have also asked for au jus or something to accompany this sandwich, but I wanted to sample the flavor of the roast beef and nothing more. It needed salt. And this is coming from someone who’s very sensitive to salt—most everything tastes too salty to me. The beef was tender enough, semi fatty, and very juicy. The bun quickly became saturated and mushy.
I think the worst part though, was the bill. That sandwich alone cost almost $5.00, for three-ounces of beef on a roll. I’ll go to Arby’s next time and get the 5-for-5 deal—five better-tasting sandwiches for the same price.
Dessert, on the other hand, was good. At $1.99 for a small cone, that’s about average. I opted for the no-sugar-added, fat-free custard—as “healthy” as you’re going to get. It was very creamy and had a rich vanilla taste. I wonder if they really gave me no-sugar, no-fat.
Anderson’s is by no means a bad place. They had some other sandwiches and meals that looked appealing as well, but their prices are comparable to a full-service restaurant. A roast beef sandwich, fries, and pop meal will run you $7.49. If you’re like me and don’t like fries but would prefer soup or a salad, the substitution will set you back another $1.
If you decide to visit, scour the Entertainment (or similar) Buffalo-area coupon book(s) for deals. A few Sundays ago Anderson’s had some coupons for BOGO sandwiches and free SPoT coffee in one of the Buffalo News ad sections. That’s the way to do Anderson’s—get a BOGO offer, and then it won’t seem so overpriced.
