It's August Already and (belated) Summertime Heat has Hit WNY—How About Some "Feel Good" Ice Cream?

Edy’s ice cream (known as Dryer’s west of the Rockies) has joined the recessionomics bandwagon and is utilizing the current economy as a marketing opportunity.

The long-time maker of frozen sweets has churned out “Red, White, and No More Blues,” the Dr. Phil of ice creams, if you will… To complement the new flavor, fans can visit edys.tasteofrecovery.com where there’s self-help information including an interactive Personal Recovery Planner. Stories from real folks who’ve lost jobs, and turned their misfortune into something good are posted. One lucky person won $100,000 in the essay contest (now closed). There’s cute copywriting like “scooping yourself up” and “getting the scoop on” the new flavor.

This website first caught my attention when I was on Edys.com looking for some other information. The next night, while at Tops, I noticed the new flavor and decided it was worth a try. Red, White, and No More Blues is vanilla ice cream swirled with blueberry and strawberry jelly. It’s basic, but a creamy, fruity treat just the same. Sometimes plain vanilla is the best.

Perhaps Edy’s was thinking proactively about helping America’s growing obesity epidemic too: Red, White, and No More Blues comes only in the Slow-Churned®, reduced-fat variety.
