My View of The Melaleuca Company

The Melaleuca Company is a vitamin, natural products, and consumables distributor. Their business model is multi-level marketing, and orders are fulfilled through mail-order. I’ve had quite an interesting experience with this company in the past three months, and desire to share my results. My story can get a little windy, so I’ll give it to you in a nutshell:

I tried a Melaleuca product that was supposed to treat a minor ailment I suffer from. After jumping through hoops, sleeping through sales presentations, and being put through hard-sell tactics, I finally was able to shell out over $20 for my first bottle of Melaleuca product.

I had less than satisfying results, and now I’m going to invoke Melaleuca’s money back guarantee. Want to know the gritty details? Read on.  Photos accompany the end of the post.

BUILDING SOME BUZZ

Going back several months ago, I wrote a “My View” editorial for the Buffalo News on the subject of eye floaters. To give a brief synopsis, floaters are harmless—but incredibly annoying—little strands of collagen that float around inside the eye and become visible to the sufferer. My eye doctor has inspected my case thoroughly and assured me it’s a normal entoptic phenomena that just so happens to affect my type-A personality in such a way as to drive me nuts at times.

I wrote my editorial to accomplish three things: raise awareness about floaters, share my sufferings, and opine how grateful I am for the gift of eyesight. The article was published on December 15, 2009, and yes, I became a local celebrity for a few days after it ran.

Shortly after the article was published, a News editor contacted me with the phone number of a gentleman who claimed he had found a successful treatment to floaters. Excited, I gave him a call. It looked as if my little article could have found a promising treatment. Naturally, I was hopeful.

This man (we’ll call him Ron) told me about a company called Melaleuca, and in particular, a vitamin called Nutra View sold by the company. Ron talked about how years of smoking had all but destroyed his eyes, and how his optometrist considered it a miracle that he could even see considering the poor condition of his eyes. Ron called me back a day later conveniently telling me that his sister is a Melaleuca distributor, a previously overlooked detail.

It is now I should mention that right after our initial phone conversation, I visited the Melaleuca website, did some research, and decided I wanted to order. But you can’t just throw some Nutra View in your e-shopping cart, type in the MasterCard numbers, and await it to arrive at your door. You have to join a club and jump through a few more hoops. So that evening I called the 1-800 number and told Melaleuca to sign me up. The lady at the other end said a New York-area distributor would be in touch.

The next morning, Ron called back with his sister standing by (we’ll call her Marilyn). And then a New York Melaleuca distributor began buzzing my cell phone all day while I was at work. Since I spoke to Marilyn first, I’d already agreed she’d be my distributor. The other guy was none too pleased with me.

THE FIRST ORDER

Marilyn turned out to be a kind older lady who loves to talk. Unfortunately, she’s lacking proficiency with the Internet. I spent over an hour on the phone with her while she droned on about Melaleuca’s skincare, homecare, toiletries, vitamins, and other products. I had to follow along with a Web-based slideshow. The reason I mention all this is because she had a horrific time directing me to the slideshow. Once I awakened from Marilyn’s sales pitch, I told her I desired to sign up. She said I could do so online, but she wasn’t sure how to do it. I coached her through setting up my account (it’s pretty much like setting up any other e-commerce account). I deserved free product just for the technical consultation!

She still didn’t get it. That’s when a three-way call got Gail involved. Gail’s another Melaleuca distributor and obviously, more capable with the computer. Gail spoke to me using what I perceived as fear tactics in order to get me to purchase more vitamins, talk to specialists about my eye condition, and even took a slight shot at my optometrist’s qualifications. This after one phone conversation. Perhaps I misread Gail’s intentions though, after all, it’s not like we talked face to face.

Melaleuca allows you to be either a direct customer or a preferred customer. Choosing preferred status means you sign an agreement to order X-number of products each month. They also include free samples with your order. Preferred customers are conveniently billed and shipped a “profile” order, should they forget to place the monthly order they agreed to. Direct customers pay a little more up front, but are free from obligations and can buy as little or as much Melaleuca as they want. Gail had never heard of anything as odd as someone wishing to be a direct buyer, and tried all the hard-sell tactics she could muster to get me to start off at preferred status. Guess what type of customer I chose to be?

SELLING IT

Melaleuca also requires a $29 seller’s kit be purchased by all new customers. They just don’t specify when it has to be purchased. I’ve yet to buy mine, although I’m reminded to every so often.

And that’s where Melaleuca becomes like every other pyramid-scheme vitamin company. While the pyramid is structured differently, (the wiki explains this in more detail) Melaleuca is just like every other Shaklee, Reliv, Quixtar, and other multi-level marketer out there. They pressure users to become distributors. Housewives, college students, and retired widows can get rich by just investing 10 hours per week.

GOING GREEN

Melaleuca claims it was green before green was in. Products like detergent are ultra concentrated; Melaleuca doesn’t ship water. They use recyclable packing materials. Everything is made from natural, sustainable ingredients.

My one tiny bottle of vitamins shipped in a box large enough to accommodate numerous high-gloss Melaleuca catalogs, selling guides, and bogus newsletters each month. Inflated plastic cushioning (the kind that’s all too fun to pop) was used as packaging. Magazines claim they are printed on recycled paper, but plastic packaging? Why not biodegradable packing “peanuts?”

Melaleuca also offers cell phone plans serviced by major wireless carriers. All those “natural” radio waves that supposedly microwave our brains? Guess that’s a good reason to purchase more Melaleuca antioxidants; zap those free radicals!

RESULTS (or lack thereof)

Beyond Nutra View, I never tried any other Melaleuca products, so I’ll admit this review isn’t too comprehensive. But Nutra View didn’t achieve what I had hoped for: resolution of my eye floaters. I was encouraged by my sales reps to take as many as three capsules a day. That would make one bottle of 30 last me 10 days. Each bottle costs juts over $20, and the directions say to only take one capsule daily. Were they trying to get me to consume more product? I don’t know. I followed the on-package directions.

Now I’ll begin the process of seeking my money back from Melaleuca, since I am not a satisfied customer. We’ll see how they honor their satisfaction guarantee. Stay tuned for future updates.

WRAPPING UP

I’m sorry if this comes across as jaded and cynical. I give most people the benefit of the doubt, and I believe Marilyn, Ron and Gail were only trying to help me. But their sales tactics were subpar, the Melaleuca ordering process tedious, and the product didn’t work. I can’t speak for Melaleuca’s other products; most were so prohibitively expensive that I wouldn’t even dream of trying them. I can’t help but sum up my experience with the Melaleuca Company as a disappointment.

  1. I also have the floaters condition. I have tried the NutraView product and found that it has helped to diminish the effect. I take one tablet as directed. While the floaters have not gone away completely, I do have clearer vision.

As a Preferred Melaleuca customer, I pay only $16 for a month's supply of NutraView. That saves me $7 each month. The initial $29 Preferred Customer Membership fee is a bargain.

We have replaced a number of the well known store brands with Melaleuca products. As a result of using the Melaleuca products, I have lost 30 pounds, which also has improved my blood pressure. Their laundry products enable me to go to sleep without sneezing due to the irritants found in the store brands.

All in all, Melaleuca has helped my family to enjoy a healthier lifestyle and save money.

    1. Glad you are enjoying your products Greg!

Jay, I am so sorry that Melaleuca was so poorly represented to you. Clearly the person(s) you spoke to did not stay with the standards that Melaleuca insists on. You should never had to deal with a 'salesy' person ever, and being a Direct customer is nothing bad. They probably didn't want that, as no commissions are earned that way.

By the way, Melaleuca is not MLM, but Direct Consumer Marketing. Meaning that consumers buy direct from the manufacturer. The reason they give commissions is because the only advertising done is by word of mouth.

Anyone involved in Melaleuca claiming to be a 'Distributor' clearly is unaware of what/who they are. We are all customers, some just prefer to help more people with health and financial wellness more than others.

  2. I think it's pretty unreasonable to say that because you had one bad experience ordering 1 Melaleuca product, that the entire company is a failure. That's like saying that because 1 bank teller didn't know what he was doing, you would stop going to the bank altogether!

I have never tried Nutraview because my eyes are in good health, but I have tried A LOT of Melaleuca's 400+ other products and can say without a doubt that they work! It's just like anything else you'll try. You'll find some products that you like more than others, some that work better for your needs than others. Some products you'll fall in love with but your sister or brother or best friend doesn't care for.

And by the way, their preferred customer membership policy is pretty similar to what you'll find at Sam's Club and Costco. You can't just walk in to Costco and expect to buy a specific product you like. You've got to be a member to get the product at that price. Matter of fact, Costco won't even let you through the door unless you flash your membership card! Melaleuca is giving you their product at a discounted price BECAUSE you are a member and you shop every month with them.

I don't know why the lady you were working with told you she was a "distributor" because Melaleuca members DONT DISTRIBUTE ANYTHING! We don't take orders, sell products, deliver products, manage inventory, none of that!! The only thing SOME members CHOOSE to do, is refer people to shop with Melaleuca. That entails enrolling the person and helping them set up their online account, so they can shop for what they need, from the privacy of their own home. THAT IS WHERE IT ENDS!
Unlike others companies, Melaleuca will compensate members that refer customers to shop with them.

Finally, I just wanted to clear this up. You CAN ABSOLUTELY purchase products from Melaleuca, just enroll as a DIRECT CUSTOMER. This just means that you'll pay full price for the product. If you want the 30-40% discount then, you'll have to enroll as a preferred customer and agree to shop with melaleuca each month. So instead of going to rite aid, cvs and wallgreens every month, you'll shop at Melaleuca instead. And there are a TON of additional membership benefits from shopping at Melaleuca as a Preferred Customer, like FREE loyalty shopping dollars, discounts at 650 online retailers, and earning 10% of your total shopping dollars back so you can spend it those banked dollars the following month. Melaleuca is neither disappointing, nor is it a scam. i can tell you that from first hand experience of trying more than 1 product. I can stand by a Melaleuca because I know its received the Blue Chip Award from the chamber of commerce and the Torch Award from the Better Business Bureau.

I feel sorry that the person who enrolled you, didn't give you all of these facts, but I just hate it when people give misinformation about melaleuca. Hate it!

  3. Oh, by the way, Nutraview is a SUPPLEMENT. It's not a Prescription Drug. So you can't expect to see dramatic benefits overnight. You've got to be taking them (according to the directions) over time to see the benefit. I'm guessing you tried only 1 bottle and then stopped taking them, am I right? That's probably why you didn't see much of an effect, and Greg, the guy who posted above me, did see change in his vision.

Just thought i would mention that. Hope this helps!

  4. Also, october was a special month, the sign up fee was only $1! I signed up a few months ago, also on a $1 promotional special, after staying with a friend who's family has all been using for years- my allgeries were under better wraps at her house that week then they had been in ages..I loved her personal care products I tried and couldn't wait to start using them at home- I signed up before I left her house. My mom visited me and tried mine, I am currenty ordering for her though when I see her over the holidays she wants to sit down and sign up herself.

I've been a vegetarian since I was four, my hair has never grown faster than in the last few months and im looking younger everyday...im not a bandwagon type...but im riding it.

Im still switching over all my cleaning products- the ones I've ordered so far have all done their job, I love that they come concrentrated so one bottle from then lasts much much longer than one from the store.

I really couldn't be happier about the bath/shower products- I switched everything over immediately. I've gotten so many compliments on my hair recently...I think what my lady friends are getting for christmas....melaleuca!

  5. Wow, so because you ordered 1 out of nearly 400 products, the company sux? LOL!!!
Personally we order about twice the minimum about twice a month. Most of the products that you claim are overpriced, are usually concentrates that save you money. As an example, the Laundry Detergent that costs 12 bucks, does as much as two $9.00 bottles of Tide. You see how that works. Same for most other products.

  6. The product is good but they are actually hurting themselves buy have a concentrate product. Because of the point system you can't do 96 loads of laundry. And save your breath about, well you can buy other product. The points for the products I would use are to low. Then they'll say well just buy 3 at a time. How buys 3 tooth pastes at a time. I don't tie up my money in house hold products. I buy it when I need it. LIKE EVERYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET. The company has a terrible way to get there product out there. Like I said the products is good it just the way you have to get it. Look ask yourself why don't they just sell this through an Internet store, they don't need you the product can sell it's self if its good. The answer is they need the membership (points). Pure and simple that is why it is a Pyramid. This isn't the 1950's any more you don't need a brick and mortar store. You just need a web site.

  7. I have been a melaleuca customer for 3 years. Their products are incredible you can not buy anything like them in stores. They also save youmoney because they are so highly. Concentrated. Anyone I know who has tried their 10 top products never wants to go back to store bought inferior less effective items. They have great customer service. I am very upset about what you wrote and hope that people do not listen to you

  8. The main thing that has to happen here for it to be a fit for anyone is you first have to like the product and think it's a value to you. That's really how it works, you like the product and then you tell someone else about the product. I've found that the products do indeed sell themselves and the people I have referred continue to buy the products because they like them and then they tell someone else.

As far as a MLM or Pyramid I would have to disagree as we are Consumer Direct Marketing which simply means you the consumer like the product and in return for your referral or your help marketing the product you get some commission for doing so. If you think just because the higher you get on the ladder the more money you make is a pyramid and that's bad then you'll not find anything that doesn't work this way, sorry.

As far as having to purchase your points per month, if you truly like their product, you shouldn't have a problem buying from their 350 items because you are already buying these somewhere else already. The benefit here is you save money and get better product. If you do not like the product then it's not for you.

In conclusion, Melaleuca has great products at great value. It's not going to be for everyone but it is for me and thousands of others. If it's not for you, that's ok but if you want to know more about these great products please let me know.

  9. I personally do believe some products can be a little bit on the expensive side but I use the lotion, deodorant, and toothpaste and I love them. I was already seeking natural products for my body and was paying $7 per tube of toothpaste and for a stick of deodorant. Melaleuca is around $4.50 each. The laundry soap comes in very small packaging where as a normal bottle of detergent comes in a huge container. I prefer the minimized trash. I do not have any health problems at this time and I have not tried any of their supplement products. I do have to spend a certain amount every month about $55 with shipping and tax, each month has totaled about $75 but what I purchase are all consumable products that I was already buying monthly at the store. I totally agree that the presentation and slide show were DREADFUL and have had no desire to keep in contact w/ the distributor who signed. She also did not know how to sign me up using the web although I find navigating the website quite easy. One annoying thing is you have to purchase info about the products instead of making it available for download or web viewing so I haven't really been motivated to share the site with others and am currently only a customer.

    1. I'm a Melaleuca customer and I don't have to purchase info about the products. And if you look on the website where you do your shopping you will find a product tab for any product. It has all the information about the product just like the items at the grocery store. Plus, each time they have a new shopping catalog for us, it comes to my front door (UPS)with my shopping order. I don't pay for it, NO ONE pays for it. It is FREE. Also, if you want to be a preferred customer (a person who shops every month) you'll get $100 in FREE products, like I did, and they weren't sample sizes. Did you know that you get FRESH products that haven't sat on the store shelf or at the warehouse until they sell? Melaleuca manufactures based on usage, that's why they ask us to shop each month and in the process we get ALL FRESH products! I've been a shopper for 2 years now and I love every product that I've tried and I'll never go back to buying these products from anywhere else. Did I mention that the supplements are the best I've ever taken? Wow, so amazing!! The only way you can be a customer is to be referred by another customer. Anyone out there that wants to be a customer, I'd be happy to refer you. (And I know how to use the website, it's simple!) Send me an email to jewelsgardner99@gmail.com
