It’s mid-July, and you know what that means? Fresh, New York-grown blueberries are beginning to pop up in grocery stores and farmer’s markets around Buffalo. Canadian coffee and donuts chain Tim Horton’s has taken notice and is offering a variety of new blueberry-studded baked goods just in time for berry-pickin' season.
Chances are you’ve heard about the host of antioxidants and other healthful benefits in these little azure orbs. I suppose that makes up for the guilt in eating donuts and muffins—hey, at least the blueberry ones have something healthy in them!
Tim Horton’s is featuring a two blueberry donuts and a whole-grain blueberry muffin. I’ve had the opportunity to try all three, and figured I’d share my thoughts:
Blueberry Glazed Donut: Very sweet, but can be fixed by swiping off some of the thick glaze. The donut itself is cakey and dense, and packed with bits of blueberry that one can only hope are real. The blueberry flavor is subtle, but noticeable.
Blueberry Bloom Donut: This is like Strawberry and Chocolate-Cherry Bloom donuts. The bloom donuts are shaped like a flower with six petals and a plop of exposed jelly filling in the middle. They are made from a lighter, yeast dough, and remind me of monkey bread: You can pull off each petal and dunk it in the jelly. The blueberry one is frosted and has crunchy candy on it, and is overall too sweet. The cherry one tastes like cough syrup. Strawberry Bloom is my favorite.
Whole-grain Blueberry Muffin: This one’s a double-whammy when it comes to health: blueberries plus whole grain. It’s pretty tasty too, with cinnamon crunch and oats on the soft, chewy muffin top (the best part, in my opinion). The wheaty flavor shines through, yielding a dense, grainy, but pleasant texture. Fresh blueberries abound. You may be surprised that this one is the worst when it comes to calories and sugar. Nutritional information for all new products is available on Tim Horton’s website.

Overall, the new blueberry baked goods from Timmy’s are a tasty seasonal offering. They go great with a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee (best brew in town, in my opinion).
