A Grand Slam Birthday Gift

Here’s a good deal to take advantage of: sign up for Denny’s Restaurants email list and birthday club. At sign up you receive a printable coupon (mine was for 20% off) and various monthly offers. For my birthday I got a free Build Your Own Slam breakfast and a free dessert with entrée purchase. The breakfast coupon can be used on a range of dates, not just my birthday, so I decided to cash in early the other morning.

Build Your Own Slam is a customizable breakfast where you can choose four from over 10 breakfast staples. There’s eggs, toast, pancakes, oatmeal, hash browns, etc. Denny’s has just started offering some better-for-you selections, so I decided to build my breakfast out of those. My final creation: two whole-wheat pancakes, scrambled egg whites, turkey bacon, and chicken sausage. Oh, and of course, Denny’s Breakfast Roast coffee: brewed strong, all day long…

The wheat pancakes were every bit as good as regular Denny’s pancakes. They had the signature sweet taste of anise and chewy, grainy texture thanks to the whole-wheat flour. The egg whites weren’t mushy or flavorless and actually had the consistency of whole scrambled eggs. Turkey bacon was crisp and with a slightly distinct turkey taste. A good thing if you don’t care for pork, such as I. The savory chicken sausage patty also had a taste different from its pork counterparts, and the spices reminded me a little bit of Italian meatballs. Nothing was greasy. The pancakes were served on their own plate: A huge plus if you’re like me and don’t like syrup getting into your eggs. Service was very friendly and attentive, keeping my coffee cup full at all times. And speaking of the coffee, Denny’s "strong all day long" quip was a bit off. This was a generic, decent tasting roast, but semi-weak. I ruined the first cup with way too much milk, but learned quickly thereafter. It wasn't bad, but not Tim Horton's either.

I think this ubiquitous, national chain may quickly become one of my new favorites. I’ve often overlooked Denny’s. The restaurants are usually far from fancy, but they are clean, prices are decent, and the food is consistently good.

One last note: The email club offers may vary by region and franchisee. Don’t hold me to it if you sign up and don’t get a free breakfast out of the deal.
