A Birthday Gift to Perk Me Up...

One week (as of Thursday, 8/6) until my birthday. My inbox was flooded with coupons and various offers from restaurants, retailers, and other mailing lists I belong to. Honestly, a little extra spam email throughout the year for all these coupons is well worth it.

Anyway, among the messages was one from Perkins Restaurants for a free slice of pie for my birthday (well, a coupon) with purchase of any entrée. I happened to be going by a Perkins yesterday, and since I haven’t eaten at one since I was a little kid, it seemed appropriate to pay a visit.

The Hamburg Perkins on 20-A at Seven Corners is newer, clean, and tastefully decorated. A full-service bakery is also housed in the restaurant, ensuring baked goods are made-from-scratch and fresh. I was promptly seated and offered coffee. Like IHOP, Perkins leaves you a carafe of hot coffee on the table—definitely better than having to be waited on for each and every refill. The coffee was generic tasting, but in a good way. The carafe probably led to me drinking too much of Perkins house roast!

For an entrée I chose the Build Your Own Omelette, which allowed choice of two ingredients. Breakfast meats, vegetables, and a selection of cheeses—pretty much standard omelette fare—is there for the picking. Two ingredients seems a little sparse to me, and extras cost a pricy $0.79. I chose a garden vegetable medley of onions, peppers, and celery (this counts as one) along with mushrooms. For a side, I opted for three of Perkins secret-recipe pancakes. Imagine my surprise when the server also asked whether I wanted home fries or hash browns. That’s a lot of food for $7.99! I chose the home fries.

My breakfast arrived quickly, was hot, and made exactly to order. A trio of syrups—apricot, tri-berry, and maple-flavored—accompanied my pancakes. The pancakes were light, very fluffy, and very white in the center (like they used uber-bleached flour). Compared to Denny’s sweet, anise-spiced pancakes, Perkins are noticeably saltier, with an eggy, griddle taste. That said, they’re not bad, and sweet syrup compliments them nicely, but I still like Denny’s better, plus they offer whole-wheat ‘cakes too.

The omelette came filled with fresh garden veggies and flavorful baby bella mushrooms. I wish there’d been more vegetables in the omelette, but it wasn’t bad by any means. The way Perkins rolls up its egg creations is a little different—they resemble a giant burrito, only made with egg instead of a flour tortilla. The home fries were crispy, skin-on, whole potatoes, but they smelled of fry oil. Somehow these just didn’t appeal to me alongside pancakes. The potatoes proved to be kind of bland and went mostly uneaten.

For my free slice of pie, I opted for Wildberry, made fresh with seasonal berries. I asked to have mine wrapped to go since I was plenty full from the main meal (and pie plus pancakes? Bleh…) This pie was very good with a flavorful, flaky, tender crust. The berry filling was full of sweet berry flavor, rich texture, and vibrant color. I enjoyed it that evening with a scoop of Red, White and No More Blues… (follow the link to my blog about that ice cream).

Perkins was another good experience. I’d definitely visit again. Go to PerkinsRestaurants.com to sign up for their birthday club and you too can enjoy a little “perk” on your birthday.
